WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK

World Glaucoma Week at Dalmar Specialist and Teaching Hospital

Dalmar Specialist and Teaching Hospital proudly commemorated World Glaucoma Week with an insightful seminar on Thursday, 10th March 2022. This initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Ahmed Dalmar and Dr. Ibrahim Al-Awad, esteemed consultant ophthalmologists and surgeons at the hospital’s eye unit. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about glaucoma, its diagnosis, management, and treatment strategies.

Key Insights from the Seminar

Glaucoma, known as the “silent thief of sight,” was emphasized as a major global health concern. It affects approximately 60.5 million individuals worldwide and ranks as the third leading cause of irreversible blindness in Somalia.

During the seminar, the following key points were highlighted:

  • Silent Nature of Glaucoma: Patients often remain unaware of their condition due to its asymptomatic nature.
  • Importance of Glaucoma Screening: Early detection through regular screenings is crucial for initiating timely treatment.
  • Diagnostic Challenges: Diagnosing glaucoma requires a comprehensive approach involving multiple tests and assessments.
  • Lifelong Management: Once diagnosed, lifelong follow-up is essential to monitor and manage the condition effectively.
  • Irreversible Vision Loss: Damage caused by glaucoma is permanent; therefore, preserving existing vision is paramount.

Commitment to Vision Health

Dr. Dalmar and Dr. Al-Awad reiterated the critical role of routine eye check-ups in detecting glaucoma early, thereby preventing irreversible vision loss and contributing to global efforts in blindness prevention
